What Should You Wear for the Helicopter Tour?
Dress in layers to handle changing temperatures:
- Moisture-wicking base layers
- Warm fleece or down jackets
- Windproof and waterproof outerwear
- Comfortable trekking pants
- Warm hat, gloves, and UV-protective sunglasses
- Sturdy footwear and warm socks
- Don’t forget sunscreen and your camera!
Important Note on Landing Regulations
The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) has set strict rules for helicopter landings at Kalapatthar to ensure safety and environmental protection. Here’s what you need to know:
Sharing Helicopter Flights:
- A shared helicopter usually carries either 2 or 5 passengers.
- Landing at Kalapatthar is only allowed if there are 2 passengers.
- If the helicopter has 5 passengers, it will not land at Kalapatthar. It will fly over the area instead.
- Regardless of the number of passengers, all shared flights land at Hotel Everest View for breakfast.
Private Helicopter Flights:
- In a private charter, the helicopter can land at Kalapatthar if there are 1 or 2 passengers.
- If there are 5 passengers in a private group, the helicopter will not land at Kalapatthar for safety reasons. In the case of landing it need to have the double shuttle helicopter flight from Lukla.
All private flights include a landing at Hotel Everest View for breakfast.
These policies are based on altitude restrictions, safety limits, and aircraft performance. Kalapatthar sits at a very high altitude (5,644m), and the helicopter’s ability to land depends on the number of passengers and total weight.
When Is the Best Time to Take This Helicopter Tour?
For crystal-clear skies and safe flying conditions, plan your tour during Nepal’s peak trekking seasons:
- Spring (March to May): Stable weather and blooming rhododendrons create stunning landscapes.
- Autumn (September to November): Dry, clear air offers the best visibility and breathtaking mountain views.
- Avoid the monsoon (June to August) and winter (December to February) seasons, when unpredictable weather increases the chance of cancellations and poor visibility. Helicopter Flights can be arranged.
Why Choose a Helicopter Tour Over Trekking?
- Save Time: Reach Everest Base Camp and surrounding peaks in just a couple of hours instead of 11+ days of trekking.
- Less Physically Demanding: Perfect for travelers with time constraints, health issues, or limited fitness.
- Unmatched Aerial Views: Enjoy panoramic bird’s-eye views impossible on foot.
- Comfort & Convenience: No heavy backpacks or long walks; just relax and enjoy the ride.
- Bucket-List Experience: A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see Everest from a privileged vantage point.
Trekking remains a rewarding option for adventure seekers, but a helicopter tour offers fast, luxurious access to Everest’s grandeur.
What About Altitude Sickness on the Helicopter Tour?
While altitude sickness can affect some visitors, the risk during this helicopter tour is low because:
- The time spent at extreme altitudes (Kalapatthar) is brief (about 10 minutes).
- Rapid ascent can trigger mild symptoms like headaches or dizziness, so stay hydrated and listen to your body.
- Consult your doctor if you have a history of altitude sickness.
Where Does the Helicopter Land?
The main landing is at Kalapatthar, known for its unbeatable views of Everest (8,848 m), Lhotse, Nuptse, and Pumori. This high-altitude stop gives you a rare chance to step out, stretch your legs, and capture photos in the shadow of the world’s tallest peak.
Helicopter Model and Safety
For high-altitude flights like this, we use the Airbus AS350 B3 (H125), globally recognized as the safest and most reliable helicopter for mountain flying. For lower altitudes, we also operate AS350 B2, AS350 FXII, Robinson R66, and Bell helicopters, depending on passenger load and conditions.
Can You Breathe at Kalapatthar?
At 5,644m, mild symptoms like shortness of breath are common. It is natural due to the rapid ascent from Lukla. If symptoms worsen, our trained pilot will immediately descend to a lower altitude. Your safety is always our top priority.
Duration of the Flight
The Lukla to Everest Base Camp Helicopter Tour takes about 35 minutes one way. That’s a 35-minute flight through the heart of the Himalayas, passing over some of the most iconic trekking routes and landscapes in the world.
Sharing Basis and Private Options
You can book your flight on a sharing basis with other travelers or privately for a more personal experience:
- Sharing Basis: USD $450 per person
- Private Helicopter (up to 3 pax): USD $1,400
- Private Helicopter (up to 5 pax with shuttle): USD $1,800
Due to the thin air at high altitude, helicopters can only carry 3 passengers above 4,500m. For groups of 4 to 5, the pilot will perform a shuttle via Pheriche (4,300m).
Trek and Fly Hybrid Option
You can also combine short treks with a helicopter ride. For example, trek from Lukla to Namche and then fly to Everest Base Camp, land at Kalapatthar, and return to Lukla by air. This hybrid option allows you to enjoy both hiking and helicopter views.
Conversation with the Pilot
Yes, you can talk to the pilot using the onboard headphones. However, please avoid unnecessary chatter. The pilot may need to communicate with air traffic control or focus on safe flying.
Cancellation and Refund Policy
Unpredictable mountain weather and other factors can delay or cancel flights. In case of weather-related cancellations, a full refund will be provided. For customer cancellations, charge applies. No refund is issued once the flight has taken off.
Safety Guidelines
- Only approach the helicopter after the pilot signals.
- Never approach from the rear – always from the front.
- Keep your head low when walking near the helicopter.
- Follow all pilot instructions during boarding and landing.
